Legal Advice for Half the Price Ask a question

Questions and answers

Straight answers about who I am, what I can do, and what I can't.

Who are you?

A former barrister, called to the Bar of England and Wales. I spent years in county courts and tribunals before being disbarred after a long dispute with the regulator. You'll find contact details at the bottom of every page.

Can a disbarred barrister give legal advice?

Yes. In England and Wales, giving general legal advice isn't a protected activity. Things like representing someone in court, issuing court proceedings for them, and certain document work are. I don't do any of those.

The honest trade-off: I'm not regulated by the Bar Standards Board or the Solicitors Regulation Authority, so you don't get the protections that come with a regulated lawyer, such as their complaints schemes. That's partly why the first reply is free and sessions cost about half the usual price.

What does the free reply include?

One written reply by email about one problem. I'll tell you what I think your position is, what your options are, and what I'd do in your shoes. If I need more information I'll ask.

How fast will I hear back?

Usually within two working days. If there's a hearing or deadline in the next few days, put the date in the form so I can see it straight away. If it's within 48 hours, don't wait for me: the home page lists free same-day help.

Do I have to give my real name?

No. Any name will do. I do need an email address so I can reply, and I only use it for that.

Can I send documents?

Not through the form. Describe them in your own words to start with. If I need to see something, I'll reply with a way to send it.

What happens in the paid session?

An hour together by phone, video, or face to face in Sussex if needed. You send me your documents beforehand and I read them properly, so the hour is spent on your problem and not on catching up. We agree the time, price and terms in writing before you pay anything. See the terms. Ask about a session.

Will you go to court with me?

No. I can help you prepare for a hearing you're attending yourself: what to bring, what the judge will want to know, and how to put your side clearly. If you need someone to speak for you, I'll say so and suggest where to look, including free schemes.

Do you help with immigration or criminal cases?

No. Immigration advice can only be given by people who are specifically authorised, and criminal cases need a regulated lawyer. For criminal matters, ask for the duty solicitor at the police station or court. It's free.

I live in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Can you help?

Not really. Their law is different and I'd only be guessing. Citizens Advice Scotland and Advice NI are good places to start.

What do you do with what I write?

I read it and reply to it. I don't share it, sell it or use it for marketing. The privacy notice explains how long it's kept and how to ask for it to be deleted.

Why "half the price"?

Because many high street solicitors charge £450 or more an hour, and an hour here costs about half that or less. The price is agreed in writing before you pay. You also start with a free reply, so you know whether I'm useful before you spend anything.
